内容記述 | In this paper, the present conditions, issues and future topics regarding traditional Japanese textile techniques are discussed on the basis of the present author’s research over the recent few years. In Japan, traditional craft techniques have survived as a result of measures for their protection enforced by the national and local governments. Although holders of craft techniques, receiving grants and other forms of support, are engaged in raising successors, it seems that they have placed too much emphasis on transmitting techniques and have not made much effort to interpret their traditional craftworks in a way that is more in tune with today’s lifestyle. Finding the relationship between ageing technique holders and the young generation, and between traditional craft techniques and contemporary society as well as future successors will be important factors for reconfirming the place of craft techniques in today’s society. Craft techniques, unlike objects, are intangible and constantly developing and changing. Although it is possible to protect craftworks by documentation, it is not possible to conserve the techniques themselves without transmitting them from person to person. Thus, in the field of craft techniques, too, a comprehensive documentation system should be organized as soon as possible. It is also necessary for research organizations to support holders of techniques so that they may be able to document and preserve their own skills. More than anything else, craftworks need to be accepted in today’s society and consumed. Finally, that craft techniques, as selected techniques for preservation, are actively utilized for the preservation of tangible cultural properties will be important for the preservation and transmission of textile techniques in the future. |
