内容記述 | The Isonokami Jingū, located 9.5 kilometers south cf Nara City, is an old Shinto shrine founded in the ancient times in dedication to a miraculous divine sword, famous for the mythological legend about the sacred sword and for the existence of numberless weapons which were orce treasured in its repository. There exists in the repository an iron sword with seven-branched blade, 75 centimeters in total length, having an inscription inlaid with gold. The existence of this sword came to call attention of scholars in about 1875, since when there have been published several opinions about it which were not very satisfactory as yet. The writer had an opportunity to study it in 1946-'47, when he succeded to decipher the characters “the King of Wo” among those of the inscription, and of late added to his results thanks to the valuable suggestions from Prof. S. Umehara and Mr. K. Kayamoto. The inscription on one side of the blade runs, in the original Chinese characters, as ? ? ? ? ? follows : 泰和四年五月十一日丙午正陽造百練銕七支刀生辟百兵宜供供侯王□□□ ? ? □作; while that of the other side goes: 先世以來未有此刀百濨王世子奇生聖音故爲倭王旨造傳不□世. The 泰和四年 (fourth year of T'ai-ho) in the inscription is concluded to be either the year 230 or 369 A. D. Of these two the latter date is to be adopted, since 百濨 (archaic, *Păk-tsiəg) in the text is considered to be a phonetic equivalent of Fine 百濟 (archaic, *Păk-tsiər; Japanese, Ku-dara; Korean, Paekche) which is the Korean dynasty founded early in the fourth century. Thus the inscription would be interpreted as follows: in the obverse side, “At the noon of the eleventh (or sixteenth) day of the fifth (or first) month of the fourth year of T'ai-ho, the seven-branched sword was made with refined iron tempered a hundred times. It keeps away various dangers in battles, and is fit to be owned by princes and kings. It was made by...... ” (obliterated. Translator's note: the square marks □□ are used to represent the same number of illegible characters); on the reverse side: “Swords of this type had never been found since previous generations, but this came to be made at the order of the King of Wo in Japanese, Wa, meaning Japan) because the King and the Crown Prince of Paekche are under the protection of Ycur sacred virtue. May it be handed down to coming generations for ever.” |
