内容記述 | The Fukuchi-in Monastery, Hiroshima Prefecture, owns two statues of Eleven-headed Kannon (Avalokitesvara) in identical style. One of them has been found contained in its body ten coins of Engi mintage. The Engi coins were issued from the 7 th year of Engi (A. D. 907) onwards and were in use for fifty years till the 1 st year of Tentoku (957). Engi coins have also been discovered within the trunks of the Elevenheaded Kannon at Yakshi-ji, Nara and the Shokannon at Kanshin-ji, Osaka Prefecture. Certain similarities of ornamental design applied on the statues existed between the Fukuchi-in image and those at Yakshi-ji as well as Kanshinji. We can find in some documents of the period recording the dedication of newly-issued coins to sacred images. It may thus be assumed that these statues mentioned above were produced within the same period. If so, the two Fukuchi-in images can be dated earlier than the Yakushi statue at Zensui-ji, Shiga Prefecture, of which the trunk contained votive articles bearing an inscription dated in the 4th year of Shoreki (993). The images in question may therefore be regarded as valuable work whose production falls in the first half of th 10th century. | |||||||||
