内容記述 | Here introduced is a draft painting for one of a pair of six-fold screens of “ Hawking of Courtiers in Spring and Winter ” by Hiroyuki SUMIYOSHI, which is preserved by the library of Waseda University. The pair of painted screens based on this draft was among the ten pairs of folding screens presented to the king of Korea from the Japanese shōgun, Ienari TOKUGAWA, in the eighth year of Bunka Era (1811). The details of the process of the decision, order, production and presentation to the delegates of the gifts, including these screens, may be seen in “Documents Concerning the Korean Delegates' Visit to Japan” a copy of which is kept in the Historiographical Institute of the University of Tokyo. This description, which is very interesting not only from the viewpoint of social and ecomonic history but also from the art historical viewpoint, is put into print in the present article. At the same time, the author introduces a pair of two-fold screens owned by Kobayashi Art Trading Company, Nikkō, which is supposed to have been made after his draft. Hiroyuki SUMIYOSHI (1754-1811) was a leading painter who was good at a sort of traditional style. This painting does not represent real hawk ing as hawking was not actually practised among the courtiers at the time. However, it has an element of reality which is enough to show his ability until the very last year of his life. |
