内容記述 | Part I of this paper is presented in Nos. 112 and 113 of the journal. Of the Kizil mural segments collected by the German expedition of A. von LE COQ and now outside Germany, seventy six are presently known They are listed in the table in pages 50 and 51 of this number. They include thirty-one segments from the Cave of Māyā in the Third Area of Kizil, many of which are in the possession of the National Collection of Fine Arts, Washington. These twentynine segments from the Cave of Māyā are all reproduced as plates and figures in this number and the next number. The “Preaching Scene” segments among them are the subject of the present paper. Besides the “Preaching Scene” of the cave, LE COQ's expedition brought back pictures of the “Cremation of Śākyamuni” from the front-side wall of the inner hall, the “The First Compilation of Scripture” from the right wall of the right corridor, the “Distribution of Buddha's Relics” from the left wall of the corridor, the “Buddhas and Bodhisattvas” from the left wall of the left corridor, the “Story of King Ajāśatru” from the right wall of the corridor and the large composition from the antechamber. These were published in such books as Alt Kutscha and Die Buddhistische Spätantike in Mittelasien. It is recognizable that the segments taken up in this paper as the main theme belonged to the “Preaching Scenes” of the side walls of the main hall, that is the walls d and d' in the plan sketch of fig. 1, few parts of which were published in the above mentioned books. The original positions of the segments in the compositions could be assumed from the detailed description of these compositions in Altbuddhistische Kultstätten in Chinesische Turkistan by A. GRÜNWEDEL. Of the mural segments from the Cave of Māyā, a piece in the Metropolitan Museum of Art (51. 4. 6) shown in fig. 13b has a complimentary message from LE COQ to J. HACKIN on its back. A similar message from him to Zoltan TAKACS, the first director of the Francis Hopp Museum of Eastern Art, Budapest, has been known on the back of a segment (fig. 11) in the museum. In addition to the introduction of the presently locatable segments in this Part I, the author intends to discuss the vicissitude of the preaching scene paintings in Kizil and the art historical position of the Cave of Māyā of the Third Area in Part II. |
