内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 Kangakai was an artists' club which aimed at the renovation of painting in traditional Japanese medium, founded at the initiative of Ernest F. FENOLLOSA in 1884. The activity of the club has been traced by art historians based on literary documents and its ideals have been studied on the ground of the analysis of the works by Hōgai KANŌ and other members. However, there was a limit in the past investigation since many of the works exhibited in their shows seem to have been sent out to the United States. The author, who recently had an opportunity to examine the relevant works in American museums such as Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Freer Gallery of Art and Philadelphia Museum of Art, found there some pieces which might have been contributed to their exhibitions.
In the present paper, the author lists up the works of artists related to the Kangakai and reconstructs the personal histories of the members including those who have been almost forgotten. His study of the characteristics of their activity revealed some interesting facts, namely, that Japanese art in the Meiji Era was linked with the Japonisme in the contemporary West and that Ernest FENOLLOSA and the Kangakai, as well, could not be out of the current.
