内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 In Nos. 265 and 266 of the Bijutsu Kenkyu, the author theorized that the most important information sources for the assimilation of the etching method in the Edo Period must have been the related articles in Huishoudelyk Woordenboek by Noël CHOMEL and the illustration of a printing press in Nieuw en Volkomen Woordenboek by Egbert BUYS.
However, in Oranda Zokuwa written by Kōkan SHIBA in 1798, fifteen years after he perfected his etching technique, another book called Konstkabinet is quoted together with the two books mentioned above. No copy of this book has not been in our knowledge until recently but the author obtained the text through Leiden University several years ago.
In the present paper, he introduces the related portions of this book. In particular, the chapter on the prescription of the varnish for etching, “Om ten zeer goede Vernis te maaken om te etzen” is translated into Japanese and compared to the articles in the other two books. The result of the comparison indicates that everything in the description of the
Konstkabinet is included in the comprehensive articles in Huishoudelyk Woordenboek.
On the other hand, there is an articles titled “Oranda Dōhan-e-hō” in the record called Saikaiho written by the monk painter Hakuun (1764-1825) who served Sadanobu MATSUDAIRA, a statesman, and the article has an illustration of a wooden printing press. The description added to it is quite simple but it explains the entire process of the etching production very accurately. It is an early example of printing press illustration although it is preceded by that in Seiyō Gadan by Kankō TAKAMORI. Hakuun's description is compared here in this paper with eight other records concerning the etching technique written between 1787 and 1848.
Thus the three kinds of Dutch books used in Japan as information sources of the etching technique since the late eighteenth century and nine records written in Japan around that time are discussed in the present paper.
