There is as yet no conclusive theory regarding its age. The inscription found inside the statue mentions the name “Sensō 暹僧, the Jōza Igi-shi(second master of the monastery ceremonies)”, but it does not give any date.\n     The inventory of the monastery dated 1134, among the archives of the Kanzeon-ji, contains a statement that a statue of Bato Kannon was newly made, proving that one was made some time around that date. Furthermore, the name Senzō 暹僧, with the title of the Jōza Igi-shi, is frequently found in the Kanzeon-ji archives between 1120 and 1132. Because the character sō 僧 in the name Sensō, found\nin the above-mentioned inscription, is not suitable for the name of a priest, it is highly probable that sō is an erroneous transcription of zō 増. That is to say, the present writer is inclined to think that Sensō is identical with Senzō. Most likely the subject statue was made during ten to twenty years before 1143, the year in which the above-mentioned inventory was edited.
