内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 Japanese painting circle during the third decade of the Meiji Period (1897 - 1906) was enlivened by the general prosperity of the society following the victory in Sino-Japanese War. It developed dashing activity and gave birth to many groups of artists.
The Ugō-kai is one of the groups of artists which emerged on the wave of prosperity. It attracted special attention for its unique characteristics : studies by its members were exclusively directed towards figure subjects, and the majority of its members were artists along the line of Ukiyo-e traditional since the Edo Period (early 17th to mid-19th centuries). Originally it was a small group of artists and art lovers, from which it was enhanced into a notable organization. Beginning in 1901 it held twenty-three exhibitions until 1912, as are described in details in this article. During this period the artists belonging to it endeavoured diligently for the resurrection of the old style of Ukiyo-e as a modern type of painting ; for this purpose they also studied the forms and techniques of Western art. Their efforts gradually made way into Bun-ten (Education Ministry Art Exhibition) and In-ten (Nippon Bijutsu-in Exhihition) organizations, which were the central institutions of Japanese painting, and achieved a notable success. KABURAGI Kiyokata, who held the leading position in the society throughout the period of its activity and who created a unique style out of that of Ukiyo-e, was honoured with the Cultural Decoration in 1954. The fact proves that the activity of the Ugō-kai was recognized officially ; in other words, that it motivated the old Japanese painting on figure subjects to attain a renewed development in modern art.
