内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 In Parts IV and V of this paper, the author discusses the life of OGIHARA, Morie, in Tokyo since he came to Tokyo on October 21, 1899, until he left for the United States on March 22, 1901, in which period he eagerly studied painting.
Morie who came to Tokyo for the study of painting met SŌMA, Aizō, from the same village, who had been stayed there for the medical treatment of his sick wife sine September of the year. Morie then was introduced to IWAMOTO, Yoshiharu, the president of a girls' school, Meiji Jogakkō, by SŌMA. Meiji Jogakkō founded by IWAMOTO himself was one of the earliest Christian schools operated by Japanese themselves. IWAMOTO who had been carrying out western type of Christian education for girls decided to take care of Morie. Soon Morie was given a small house in the ground of Meiji Jogakkō and from November 5, Morie attended Fudosha, a private institute of western-style painting over which KOYAMA, Shōtarō, (1857–1913) presided. He here studied western-style painting from the first steps. At the same time he learned various things from IWAMOTO and heard the preachings and religious talks from such elders of the Chris tendom as UEMURA, Masahisa, and UCHIMURA, Kanzō. Though Morie after all did not become a Christian, his religious experience in this period was to characterize his personality and his art through his life. That is, he denied things crude and searched for things pure. It is one of the important features of his art.
While living in the ground of the girls' school, he fell in love with some students and it brought him agony. This agony, as well as the craving for the study, drived him to the desire of visiting the United States. On March 23, the thirtyfourth year of Meiji Era (1901) he, regardless the opposition of the elders and friends, left for the States accompanying an instructor of Meiji Jogakkō KAWAI, Unkichi, who happened to travel to the States for raising funds for the school.
The present author here traces Morie's diverse activities and his spiritual growth in this period.
