内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 We know very little about Mōkō ISHIKAWA. He had other personal names, Norimasa and Kōzaburō, and used a Dutch name Leeuwberg. He was a younger brother of Tairō ISHIKAWA (also self-titled Tafelberg; 1765-1817). He copied “Flowers in Vase and Birds” (1725), an imported painting by Willem van ROYEN (1654-1728), a painter of Amsterdam, in Japanese materials togather with his brother Tairō in 1796. About seven works by him, including“Lion”now in question, are known.
There are two paintings by Mōkō entitled “Lion.” The position of the lion and the form of the trees behind are very much the same. But the width is greater than the height in the painting now in question (Pl. IX-b) while the width is smaller in the other one. This naturally makes the two compositions a little different. The lion is not a native animal in Japan and Japanese people could not see it in the Edo Period. Therefore these two lion paintings were perhaps modelled after an imported Western print. Though we cannot point definitely to the work which was used as the model, the etching shown in Pl. IX-a might possibly have some relationship.
This etching is a work of Jakob van der SCHLEY (1715-1779) of Amsterdam, who was a disciple of Benard PICART (1673–1733) who had migrated from France to Amsterdam. The three lions in this etching are very close to those in the set of etchings, “Variae Leonum Icones (Various Figures of Lions)”by A. BLOOTELING (1634-1698) which is introduced in Mr. SAKAMOTO's paper in the present number as well as to the works by Mōkō ISHIKAWA. The etching by SCHLEY is presumed to be a leaf from a botanical publication or a geographical publication on Africa.
The lion form in the two lion paintings by Mōkō ISHIKAWA bears a close resemblance to one of the three lions in SCHLEY's work. The coconut tree and other trees behind the lion also suggest a close relationship between SCHLEY'S work and the works of Mōkō ISHIKAWA.
