The fourth scroll depicts the scene in which Śākyamuni, after leaving Kapila Castle, has just begun ascetic religious practices in the mountains. The upper left of the scroll shows his attendant Chandaka, who accompanied him from the castle as well as his beloved horse Kanthaka, being about to leave him. To the left, Śākyamuni stands with his head shaven. In the lower middle section Chandaka and Kaņthaka part company with him and descend down the mountains. Next, to the right of Chandaka's descent, is Šākyamuni exchanging his clothes for those of a hunter whom he has met and who is actually the Suddha-adhivāsā in disguise. Above this is shown the scene where the Suddha-adhivāsā still in the guise of a hunter, carries the Sākyamuni's clothes and rises toward heaven. And to the left, Śākyamuni is shown visiting ascetics in the mountains. To the right of the rising Suddha-adhivāsā, the god of wood is depicted, reaching out a branch to help Śākyamuni who cannot raise himself out of the Nairañjanā River when he became exhausted after bathing there. Above this scene is Šakyamuni seated in meditation. In the upper middle section and in the lower right Śākyamuni is depicted defeating a dragon. Both these scenes illustrate the story of the reform of the three Kāśyapa brothers after Śākyamuni's overcoming of devil and attainment of Buddhahood. Apparently, these scenes from the latter period of his life are confused with earlier scenes in the fourth panel. The interior of an empty palace is drawn in the lower left corner, the palace from which Śākyamuni presumably left. The fifth scroll depicts scenes from Raudrākṣa fighting against a saint. The Jikōji version is the only known set of the “Eight Phases of the Life of Śākyamuni” including an independent scroll of this series of fighting scenes, portraying the heretics who opposed the construction of Jetavana Vihāra, thus challanging the magical power of the Buddhists. The heretics and the Buddhists face each other from either lower right and left corners respectively. The leader of the heretics, Raudrākṣa, and Śāriputra, a disciple of Śākyamuni, who has accepted the challange face each other at a distance. The six contests of their magical power represented here are described in the tenth volume of Hsien-wu-ching (The Sutra of Wisdom and Foolishness) translated into Chinese by Yüan-wei, Hui-chüeh and others. Although there are slight differences of detail between the sutra text and the painting, the scroll seems to have been based upon this specific sutra, or one of its derivatives. This scroll, divided into two registers by yarigasumi (a band-like swath of mist), contains the scenes of the first three competitions read from right to left, in the lower register; and scenes of the latter three, read from right to left, in the left half of the upper register. In every contest, Raudrākṣa is the first to demonstrate his magical skill. He is defeated every time by Śāriputra, who then becomes the winner. To follow the order of the six contests, in the lower right, the first one is depicted where Śāriputra causes a wind to blow down a big tree created by Raudrākṣa. The second scene represents the elephant created by Śāriputra which swallowed the flooding water made by Raudrākṣā, The third depicts the Vajra-pāṇi yeilded by Śāriputra who crushes the mountain produced by Raudrākṣa. The last three scenes are drawn from the center of the upper register to the left, the fourth contest portrays Śāriputra's bird with golden wings attacking Raudrākṣa's dragon ; the fifth, Śāriputra's lion biting a bull made by Raudrāksa ; and finally, the Vaiśravaņa, a transfiguration of Śāriputra, chasing the Yaksa, a transfiguration of Raudrākṣa, to punish him. In the far lower right corner, Raudrākṣa and his followers scamper away, having lost the competitions and, with that, any position of power.
