The set was repaired in the third year of Empō Era (1675) and the title of “Hassō Jōdō Mandara” (literally, Mandala of Eight Phases and Enlightenment) is written on the new mounting. This name of “Eight Phases of the Life of Śākyamuni” must be suitable as it is used for many other similar works. The record of a repair in 1675 tells us that the set consisted of eight scrolls at the time, and presumably this is the form of the set from the beginning. Some similar works such as one scroll in the Fukudenji, Mie, three scrolls in the Kuonji, Yamanashi, one scroll in the Nezu Museum of Art, four scrolls in the Kyūsei Atami Art Museum, and seven scrolls in the Jōrakuji, Shiga, are known. But the Jikōji version is the only complete set. Therefore, it is valuable material for the study of this type of painting.\n The eight pictures of the set are coloured paintings on silk. Each hanging scroll is made by patching three strips of silk together. The size of each scroll is between 113.1 and 115.2 cm in height and 119.4 and 120.7 cm in width. The central strips measure between 40.5 and 43.0 cm. In Part I of this number, the subjects of the first three scrolls are explained.\n The upper half of the first scroll depicts the Conception. In the upper right of the picture plane is the paradise of Maitreya ; on the middle of the left, Queen Māyā, the mother of Śākyamuni, takes a nap in the palace of Kapilavastu ; and Śākyamuni comes down on the back of a white elephant from paradise in between. The lower half of the scroll depicts a procession of vehicles drawn by elephants and horses. Since they seem to head to the palace, it must be the procession of the kings who are visiting the palace to celebrate the conception of the queen.\n The upper half of the second scroll shows two scenes. The Birth of Śākyamuni is on the right hand side, and the scene in which Śākyamuni after his birth walked seven steps in each of the cardinal directions and declared “I am the only honoured between heaven and earth” stretching one arm toward heaven and the other toward earth, is on the left hand side. Two dragon kings, who are said to have poured warm water and cool water from the sky at this moment, are also included. The lower half of the scroll depicts the so-called Outings from the Four Gates, the story that Śākyamuni, who was the first-born son of King Śuddhodana, in his excursions from the four gates of the palace saw an aged person, a sick person, a corpse and a monk.\n The upper half of the third scroll is devoted to the story of Various Competitions between the crown prince and other boys: the prince throwing an ele phant, the prince wrestling, and an arrow shot by the prince piercing seven iron drums. The lower half the subjects of the first three scrolls are explained. is the scene of the Great Departure, when the prince left the palace riding his horse for entering a reli gious life. The horse is supported by clouds in the air. \n The Competition is mentioned before the Outings from the Four Gates in scriptures concerning the biography of Śākyamuni, but in this set the order is reversed.\n(To be continued)","subitem_description_type":"Abstract"}]},"item_creator":{"attribute_name":"著者","attribute_type":"creator","attribute_value_mlt":[{"creatorNames":[{"creatorName":"関口, 正之"}],"nameIdentifiers":[{}]},{"creatorNames":[{"creatorName":"Sekiguchi, Masayuki","creatorNameLang":"en"}],"nameIdentifiers":[{}]}]},"item_files":{"attribute_name":"ファイル情報","attribute_type":"file","attribute_value_mlt":[{"accessrole":"open_date","date":[{"dateType":"Available","dateValue":"2017-10-04"}],"displaytype":"detail","filename":"317_21_Sekiguchi_Redacted.pdf","filesize":[{"value":"11.9 MB"}],"format":"application/pdf","licensetype":"license_11","mimetype":"application/pdf","url":{"label":"317_21_Sekiguchi_Redacted.pdf","url":"https://tobunken.repo.nii.ac.jp/record/6498/files/317_21_Sekiguchi_Redacted.pdf"},"version_id":"a4e1a280-de60-4781-b071-236b1405e8ef"}]},"item_keyword":{"attribute_name":"キーワード","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_subject":"釈迦八相図(広島 持光寺蔵)","subitem_subject_scheme":"Other"},{"subitem_subject":"“Eight Phases of the Life Sakyamuni” Owned by the Jikoji, Hiroshima","subitem_subject_language":"en","subitem_subject_scheme":"Other"}]},"item_language":{"attribute_name":"言語","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_language":"jpn"}]},"item_resource_type":{"attribute_name":"資源タイプ","attribute_value_mlt":[{"resourcetype":"journal article","resourceuri":"http://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_6501"}]},"item_title":"尾道市持光寺所蔵釈迦八相図について(一)","item_titles":{"attribute_name":"タイトル","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_title":"尾道市持光寺所蔵釈迦八相図について(一)"},{"subitem_title":"“Eight Phases of the Life Sakyamuni” Owned by the Jikoji, Hiroshima (Part I)","subitem_title_language":"en"}]},"item_type_id":"10001","owner":"3","path":["1069"],"pubdate":{"attribute_name":"公開日","attribute_value":"2017-10-05"},"publish_date":"2017-10-05","publish_status":"0","recid":"6498","relation_version_is_last":true,"title":["尾道市持光寺所蔵釈迦八相図について(一)"],"weko_creator_id":"3","weko_shared_id":3},"updated":"2023-05-15T14:31:45.901887+00:00"}
