The former was produced in the end of the twelfth century and the latter in the\nmiddle of the thirteenth century, both of which have been discussed in detail by the author in the book, A Study of Hōtō Mandara, published by Yoshikawa Kobunkan in 1976. The existence of the Myōhōji version was unknown at the time of publication of the book, until it was exhibited at “Buddhist Sculpture and Painting from Sakai,” a special exhibition held at the Sakai City Museum from October 6 to\nNovember 10, 1985. With the permisson of the Sakai City Museum, this paper introduces the Myōhōji version and thereby supplements the aforementioned book.\n The Myōhōji version is a hanging scroll dealing with Fascicle 7 of the Lotus Sutra, and naturally was a part of a complete set of eight or ten hanging scrolls. The pagoda composed of the text consists of nine stories, with an additional roofed wall around the first story. Therefore, at first glance it seems to be ten-storied. The surrounding pictorial scenes are selected from Chapters 20 to 24. Phrases from the sutra are inscribed by them as titles of subjects. The selection of themes are completely identical to that of the Ryūhonji version, but while the phrases from the text used as titles are simplified in the Ryūhonji version, those in the Myōhōji version are unabbreviated quotations from the scripture text.\n The individual elements of the painted scenes of the Myōhōji version are basically similar to those of the Ryūhonji version, but their arrangement within the hanging scroll is slightly different. Also, there is a considerable difference between the Myōhōji and Ryūhonji versions in that while the background for each scene is a flat field in the former, that of the latter comprises hills and rocky mountains continuig from the beach, as in the Danzan Shrine version.\n The figures of the buddha, bodhisattvas and human beings are depicted in the style of colouring the bodies with gold and silver pigment and adding the eyes and nose with ink and spotting the mouth with red pigment, which is in common with the Danzan Shrine and Ryūhonji versions.\n When observing the entire work, sweetness of the figures of the buddha, bodhisattvas and humans stands out. Also, the preference of the Fujiwara aristocracy is strongly reflected in the delicate depiction and forms of objects. Consequently, the painting can be recognized as a work preceding the Ryuhonji version, and its date can be estimated to be the end of the twelfth or the beginning of the thirteenth century.
