Auctions of Japanese things were held quite often. In the 70's either the collector or the auctioneer or both were Westerners. But in the 90's, Japanese artists themselves began to organize shows, which was a new tendency.\n2. Americans in the late nineteeth century appreciated the Japanese artistic tradition, which, in their words, had “delicacy of fancy,” “a thorough sympathy with aspects of nature.” In general, they were against the Westernized Japanese art in which linear perspective and the Western manner of shading and modelling were seen. \n3. High appreciation for ukiyo-e prints appeared in the articles in the 1890's. \n4. Japanese artists in those days seem to have known the Americans' taste to some extent. Many Japanese oil painters exhibited only water\ncolours in the States. Moreover, many of the subjects were of Japanese daily life that easily interested Westerners. \n Americans formed their general understanding about Japanese art based on such limited range of works they could see in those days.
