IV) is a scented-wood image which Priest Chōnen of the Tōdaiji had a Sung Chinese sculptor make in 986 and brought back to Japan. A tradition emerged that it was transferred from India to Central Asia, then to China and to Japan. Production of imitations of this image began in the Heian Period and became wide-spread in the Kamakura Period. Those imitations are called “Seiryōji type Śākyamuni images”. Their major characteristics are the rope-like rendition of hair derived from Gandharan tradition, and water-like flow of folds on the stomach and thigh portions of the drapery which also covers both shoulders. About one hundred examples of this type of images including those with curling hair are extant in Japan. The author has published papers on this type of images in the Hokkaidō, Tōhoku, Kanto and Chūbu Regions in earlier numbers of the Bijutsu Kenkyū. In the present paper, she discusses problems concerning some of the examples in the Kinki Region and the regions to the west of the Kinki Region. They include works in Osaka, Kyoto, Nara, Shiga, Yamaguchi, Fukuoka and Ōita Prefectures. Their forms were based on the Seiryōji image but at the same time they exhibit different modes. The datable and roughly datable works among them are those of the Byōdōji in Kyoto (1213), of the Nison'in in Yamaguchi (between 1264 and 1275), of Nara National Museum (1273) (PI. VI b) and of the Zendōji in Kyoto (1278). The piece in the Emmeiji, Osaka, (PI. V) was from the Sairinji, Osaka, which was reestablished by Priest Eison of the Saidaiji, but is recor ded to have been originally in the Hashimotodera. That means it is not in the same sectarian lineage as the images of the temples related to the Saidaiji. The images include those which are presumed to be works of the In School and of En School. The overall stylistic analysis is a subject of future study.}, pages = {1--8}, title = {西国の清凉寺式釈迦如来像 上}, year = {1983} }
