In Taishô 4 (1915) the group was formed by eight painters: Hirafuku Hyakusui as the main member, joined by Ikeda Eiji, Ogawa Usen, Ogawa Senyô, Kawabata Ryûshi, Tsuruta Gorô, Natori Shunsen and Yamamura Kôka. This group was active until its 10th exhibition held in Taishô 13 (1924). Morita Tsunetomo, Kondô Koichirô, and Ishizuka Kan joined the initial members midway through the group's history, and at the end of the group's activities, Sakai Sanryô and Okamoto Ippei exhibited works in the group's exhibitions. While technically exhibiting Nihonga works, Ogawa Usen and Kawabata Ryûshi had both been trained in Westernstyle painting, and Tsuruta Gorô was an active Western-style painter, while Okamoto Ippei and Ikeda Eiji were both manga artists. Thus the group was not necessarily a unified front, but rather a place where they could share interests and studies on an equal footing as individual friends and colleagues. It seems\nto have been a place for extremely free exchange.\n     Interest in this group has previously focused on their relationship with the Musei-kai group which advocated naturalism and their relationship with the literary realm of the day. However, this group did not have exhibition catalogues or group magazines, and hence it has been difficult to gain a full grasp of the group's nature. The Tokyo National Research Institute for Cultural Properties began a project in fiscal 2001 to “Survey developments related to modern Japanese art primarily in the early Shôwa era”. As one element of this survey, plans were made to assemble materials related to the Sango-kai. Working with Kikuya Yoshio, who had already begun research on the Sango-kai under the theme of “Changes in Naturalism from the Meiji period through the Taishô period”, this article is a gathering of materials related to the Sango-kai.
