 note = {It was early recognized that the Chinese students who studied in Japan's art schools, particularly in the Western Painting Department of the Tokyo Art School (the present-day Tokyo National University of Arts and Music), played a major role in the development of oil painting and oil painting education in China during and since the Chinese Republic (1912-1949).
     However, actual traces of study in Japan cannot be found for all of those painters who stated that they had studied in Japan or who are listed in art-related biographical dictionaries published in China as having graduated from art school in Japan. One of the reasons that, it is now hard to confirm the facts related to their study in Japan is the fact that even if Chinese students formally entered school in Japan, if they quit mid-program, or were expelled, their names are not included in the graduation or alumni records of the school. Further, even if attempts are made to confirm facts regarding matriculation, individuals outside of these schools are forbidden access to entrance applications, school registers and related documents. In addition, the records and school registers of schools such as the Taiheiyo Art Academy and the Kawabata Painting School, two of the institutions attended by Chinese art students, were lost in the war, so there remain no methods for confirming certain records from this period.
     This article then focuses on the study in Japan by four Chinese students : Gao Jeanfu and Zhang Daqian, for whom questions remain regarding the facts of their study in Japan; Fu Baoshi, whose study in Japan had a major influence on the formation of his painting style ; and Wang Shikuo, whose drawing and painting study methods gained in Japan proved instrumental in the establishment and development of the new Chinese methods of oil painting education.},
