This essay introduces the drawing and painting education of the Xuetang, or schools, of the late Qing dynasty and the schools of the Chinese Republic period.\n     The first chapter of this essay, “Prior to Art Education,” introduces the Tushanwan-Huaguan painting factory attached to the Catholic church in Shanghai in 1864, and explains how oil paintings had already been accepted in China in the late 19th century, particularly around Shanghai, as seen in the newspapers and magazines of the day. The second chapter, “Drawing and Handicrafts Education at the Xuetang schools of the late Qing dynasty” explains the process by which in 1902 Zhang Baixi used the Qinding-xuetang law regarding schools granted by the Emperor to establish drawing and handicrafts education within the school curriculum. It also introduces the contents of that arts curriculum and the teacher training involved. The third chapter “Arts Education in Republican Period Schools” introduces the transition to the schools of the Republican Period and their drawing and painting curriculum.\n     The following reference materials are included: 1.
