Modern art history ignores the “curiosity” and the “curio” because they designate articles that either fell into disrepute with the advent of modernism or were reclassified within the newer categories of “fine” and “decorative arts.” Marking significant moments in Europe and America's production of cultural knowledge about Japan, the terms curiosity and curio are thus rich sites of complex and conflicted cultural, social, economic, and political discourses of otherness\n This essay examines the changing meanings of these terms to illuminate the class and gendered dimensions of the reception of Japanese visual and material culture in Europe, and, especially, America. The word “curiosity” was used beginning in the sixteenth century to designate rarities from Japan acquired by male collectors for display in private and public cabinets of curiosities. Its diminutive form “curio,” which came into currency only with the advent of widespread trade with and travel to Japan in the nineteenth century, by contrast, designated novelties, often of small scale and cost, purchased by female consumers as accessories for the home. Thus, in both these contexts, do articles from Japan take on ideological significance that they never had in their country of origin.","subitem_description_type":"Abstract"}]},"item_creator":{"attribute_name":"著者","attribute_type":"creator","attribute_value_mlt":[{"creatorNames":[{"creatorName":"クリスティーン・グーテ"}],"nameIdentifiers":[{}]},{"creatorNames":[{"creatorName":"鈴木, 廣之"}],"nameIdentifiers":[{}]},{"creatorNames":[{"creatorName":"Christine, Guth","creatorNameLang":"en"}],"nameIdentifiers":[{}]},{"creatorNames":[{"creatorName":"Suzuki, Hiroyuki","creatorNameLang":"en"}],"nameIdentifiers":[{}]}]},"item_files":{"attribute_name":"ファイル情報","attribute_type":"file","attribute_value_mlt":[{"accessrole":"open_date","date":[{"dateType":"Available","dateValue":"2017-10-05"}],"displaytype":"detail","filename":"388_1_Christine_Redacted.pdf","filesize":[{"value":"23.9 MB"}],"format":"application/pdf","licensetype":"license_11","mimetype":"application/pdf","url":{"label":"388_1_Christine_Redacted.pdf","url":"https://tobunken.repo.nii.ac.jp/record/6146/files/388_1_Christine_Redacted.pdf"},"version_id":"06d8a3e5-833f-484e-8773-cf78809d2929"}]},"item_language":{"attribute_name":"言語","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_language":"jpn"}]},"item_resource_type":{"attribute_name":"資源タイプ","attribute_value_mlt":[{"resourcetype":"journal article","resourceuri":"http://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_6501"}]},"item_title":"異文化評価におけることばの重み―一九世紀欧米のキュリオシティー、キュリオと日本―","item_titles":{"attribute_name":"タイトル","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_title":"異文化評価におけることばの重み―一九世紀欧米のキュリオシティー、キュリオと日本―"},{"subitem_title":"The Loaded Language of Cross-Cultural Evaluation: Curiosities, Curios, and Japan","subitem_title_language":"en"}]},"item_type_id":"10001","owner":"3","path":["976"],"pubdate":{"attribute_name":"公開日","attribute_value":"2017-10-05"},"publish_date":"2017-10-05","publish_status":"0","recid":"6146","relation_version_is_last":true,"title":["異文化評価におけることばの重み―一九世紀欧米のキュリオシティー、キュリオと日本―"],"weko_creator_id":"3","weko_shared_id":3},"updated":"2023-05-15T14:42:39.049032+00:00"}
