That article discussed The First National Art Exhibition, held under the auspices of the Ministry of Education of the National Government of China in Shanghai in April 1929. The article commented on the exhibition contents and on the catalogue, Meizhan Tekan Jinbu, which was published after the exhibition closed. The catalogue's “Foreign Works' section published works by six Japanese artists, Wada Eisaku, Ishii Hakutei, Mitsutani Kunishirô, Wada Sanzô, Terauchi Manjirô, and Umehara Ryûzaburô.\n     At the time of the publication of the 1991 article, this catalogue marked the only source material on works exhibited in 1929 from Japan. The article simply mentioned the works exhibited by the six artists. The author then had a chance to examine Ministry of Foreign Affairs correspondence related to Japan's display of works in the exhibition as part of his survey regarding The Sino-Japanese Joint Exhibitions of Painting. Further the author was able to see the exhibition catalogue, Chûka Minkoku Kyôikubu Bijutsu Tenrankai Nippon Suppin Gasatsu, that published a full list and illustrations of the art works displayed from Japan.
