These include letters from Huang Fuzhou, the first\nChinese student to study at the Tokyo Bijutsu Gakko; Li\nAn (Shutong), the second Chinese student at the school,\nand two other Chinese students who enrolled later, namely\nWang Jichuan (Yangyang) and Yan Zhikan. There is one\nletter from Ko Eui-dong, the second Korean to enroll at\nTokyo Bijutsu Gakko. And there are two letters from Wang\nJichuan. This makes the total of six letters.\n We can gain a basic grasp of the foreign students who\nattended Tokyo Bijutsu Gakko through the self-portrait\ngraduation works today in the University Art Museum,\nTokyo University of the Arts, along with albums of\ngraduation photographs and other materials that are in the\nUniversity Library of Tokyo University of the Arts. See in\nthis regard, Yoshida Chizuko, Kindai Tôajia bijutsu ryûgakusei\nno kenkyû – Tokyo Bijutsu Gakkô gaikokujin ryûgakusei\nshiryô [Research on Modern East Asian Overseas Students –\nHistorical Materials Related to Foreign Students at the Tokyo\nBijutsu Gakko], Yumani Shobo, 2009. However there is\nvery little material about overseas students in general, with\nnothing more than the occasional writing left by individual\nstudents, or articles in newspapers or magazines. This dearth\nof documentary evidence leaves us with few clues about\ntheir motives for study in Japan or what their lives were like\nduring their time in Japan. Thus these six letters can be seen\nas extremely important material that provides both critical\nnew information about the students and an understanding\nof their own thoughts in their own words. For example, Li\nShutong and Ko Eui-dong were both leaders in the modern\nWestern style painting of their respective home countries of\nChina and Korea, and this makes their letters to their revered\nteacher Kuroda Seiki of great interest to researchers.\n In addition to these letters, the materials related to\nKuroda Seiki also include a letter from his acquaintance\nShigeno Shôichirô introducing the Chinese student Pan\nZijie who wanted to study at the Tokyo Bijutsu Gakko. The\nname Pan Zijie is thought to refer to the overseas student\nPan Shouheng, and thus we have also published this letter\nfrom Shigeno in this article.\n The following is a notation of the Tokyo Bijutsu Gakko\nenrollment periods for the above-named students and the\ndates of their respective letters.\n\nLetter 1. Huang Fuzhou: Entered school in 1905 (Meiji\n38) and left before graduating in 1907 (Meiji 40). The\nletter is dated December 1904 (Meiji 37), and thus dates\nimmediately before he entered the Hakubakai to prepare for\nentrance to the Tokyo Bijutsu Gakko.\n\nLetters 2 and 3. Wang Jichuan (Yangyang): Entered school\nin 1909 (Meiji 42), and graduated in 1915 (Taishô 4). The\ntwo letters are dated to September 1909 (Meiji 41) when he\nwas preparing under Kuroda’s guidance to enter the Tokyo\nBijutsu Gakko, and to the following September 1910 (Meiji\n42) when he was sending in paperwork related to his school\nentrance.\n\nLetter 4. Li An (Shutong): Entered in 1906 (Meiji 39) and\ngraduated in 1912 (Meiji 44). The letter is dated to June\n1912 (Meiji 44), after he had graduated and returned to his\nhomeland, and then came back to Japan to buy teaching\nmaterials for the Zhili Technical High School where he was\nworking.\n\nLetter 5. Yan Zhikai: Entered in 1912 (Taishô 1) and\ngraduated in 1917 (Taishô 6), and then stayed on as a\ngraduate student at the school and traveled to the United\nStates in 1918 (Taishô 7). The letter is dated to 1918 (Taishô\n7) and was a greeting letter sent while he was in the United\nStates.\n\nLetter 6. Ko Eui-dong: Entered in 1909 (Meiji 42) and\ngraduated in 1915 (Taishô 4). The letter was written at the\nJapanese home of the Korean Earl Ko Eui-kyong when Euidong\nvisited Japan eight years after his graduation.\n\nLetter 7. Overseas student-related materials. Letter from\nShigeno Shôichirô. Written in November 1909 (Meiji 42),\nintroducing the prospective student Pan Shouheng, who\nwent on to enter the school in 1910 (Meiji 43) and graduate\nin 1915 (Taishô 4).","subitem_description_type":"Abstract"}]},"item_creator":{"attribute_name":"著者","attribute_type":"creator","attribute_value_mlt":[{"creatorNames":[{"creatorName":"吉田, 千鶴子"}],"nameIdentifiers":[{}]},{"creatorNames":[{"creatorName":"Yoshida, Chizuko","creatorNameLang":"en"}],"nameIdentifiers":[{}]}]},"item_files":{"attribute_name":"ファイル情報","attribute_type":"file","attribute_value_mlt":[{"accessrole":"open_date","date":[{"dateType":"Available","dateValue":"2021-04-28"}],"displaytype":"detail","filename":"414_58_Yoshida_Redacted.pdf","filesize":[{"value":"12.7 MB"}],"format":"application/pdf","licensetype":"license_11","mimetype":"application/pdf","url":{"label":"414_58_Yoshida_Redacted","url":"https://tobunken.repo.nii.ac.jp/record/6077/files/414_58_Yoshida_Redacted.pdf"},"version_id":"fd7a6278-e8e1-4fb7-a4f8-4d9273bf0c23"}]},"item_language":{"attribute_name":"言語","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_language":"jpn"}]},"item_resource_type":{"attribute_name":"資源タイプ","attribute_value_mlt":[{"resourcetype":"journal article","resourceuri":"http://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_6501"}]},"item_title":"研究資料 黒田清輝宛外国人留学生書簡 影印・翻刻・解題","item_titles":{"attribute_name":"タイトル","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_title":"研究資料 黒田清輝宛外国人留学生書簡 影印・翻刻・解題"},{"subitem_title":"Material for Art Research, Letters from Foreign Students Studying in Japan to Kuroda Seiki: Reproductions, Transcriptions, Interpretations","subitem_title_language":"en"}]},"item_type_id":"10001","owner":"3","path":["960"],"pubdate":{"attribute_name":"公開日","attribute_value":"2017-10-05"},"publish_date":"2017-10-05","publish_status":"0","recid":"6077","relation_version_is_last":true,"title":["研究資料 黒田清輝宛外国人留学生書簡 影印・翻刻・解題"],"weko_creator_id":"3","weko_shared_id":3},"updated":"2023-05-15T14:48:25.632541+00:00"}
