 note = {Techniques related to textiles include such skills as that of manufacturing textiles, of making the tools necessary for manufacture, and of conserving them. How, then, are these skills protected by the Law for the Protection of Cultural Properties today? In Research and Reports on Intangible Cultural Heritage, No. 3 , the present author discussed the system of protection for textiles and selected conservation techniques among the craft techniques of intangible cultural properties as well as the history of that system. However, it seems that discussion about techniques related to intangible cultural heritage in general alone is not enough. For that reason, this paper aims to reconsider that system of protection by placing focus on textile techniques that are protected as folk cultural properties.
     According to the Law now, protection of textile techniques in its entirety is not executed under a unified system. Textile techniques are protected as intangible cultural properties, while techniques for making tools and raw materials for the manufacture of textiles are protected as selected conservation techniques and the tools themselves as well as manners and customs related to the manufacture of textiles are protected as folk cultural properties.
     In studying textile techniques, it is important to view them as intangible cultural properies beyond the current framework. In recent years, attempts are being made to capture cultural properties comprehensively. In fact, “intangible cultural properties” and “intangible folk cultural properties” are not distinguished in the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage which was concluded in 2003. The world is beginning to move on a different point of view from the system of protection in Japan. The author thinks that it is important to consider textile techniques with a broad viewpoint like this.},
