The collection of Umemura’s photographs was presented by his family immediately after his death, in autumn 2007, to the Department, which began to catalogue them in 2008. As for the overall description and characteristics of his photographic works as well as his career, the reportsubmitted last year by Tsuchida Makiko is to be referred to. The current paper reports on the photographs that have been catalogued since the current author took over Tsuchida’s task.\n     Umemura worked for Engeki Shuppansha, taking photographs mainly for its monthly magazine, “Engeki-kai.” He contributed as a staff photographer for as long as 57 years, from the time he took photographs for the November 1950 issue, which marked the resumption of the publication of the magazine after World War II, to the time he worked for the March 2007 issue, immediately before his death. His photographs - including not only those of the stage, mainly at kabuki theaters, but also of actors at interviews for the magazine’s feature pages and photographs featuring such details as stage sets and properties - are of great interest. The collection of his photographs, which were taken over a long period of time, represents a precious record of postwar history of the world of theater in Japan.\n     Since the collection consists of an enormous number of photographs, the Department has prioritized the task of cataloging kabuki stage photographs, placing them in chronological order and confirming the dates of performance, names of theaters and names of actors.
