This paper studies how craft techniques, in  particular those associated with textiles, have been considered in the framework of intangible  cultural properties protected by this Law, since the author feels it is important to reconsider this  topic now that the Law has been revised several times. There seem to be several issues that  appear when one looks at the system of designation. To name a few, there is a great variety in  the range of processes that are designated, conditions for designating groups holding special  techniques are ambiguous, and the ways of dealing with revived techniques seem to differ.\n     The author thinks that, in order to gain an understanding of a certain technique, it is important  to look at not only its present condition but also its origin and changes. Often one hears  comments from people making craftworks that when they visit museums they find objects  whose methods of manufacture are difficult to understand. In fact, there are many books on  textile techniques and books introducing craftsmen dating to the Edo period when textile techniques  flourished, but detailed analysis of their contents have not yet been made. Analyzing  these will not only contribute to an understanding of the origin and changes of the techniques  but may also provide clues to the manufacture of craftworks today. The author also thinks that  such analysis may also lead to a better understanding of how techniques were transmitted during  the Edo period.
