In order to respond to issues presented at this conference, meetings of interested persons from visual documentation companies, administrators and researchers have been held since 2003 on visual documentation of intangible cultural properties. At these meetings such matters as the procedures for planning and preparing visual documentation of intangible folk cultural properties as administrative projects for their protection and the methods for filming and editing have been discussed. In addition, the question of preserving and utilizing visual documents has been discussed as an equally important issue.\n     Japan has had many experiences at visual documentation as part of her projects for the protection of intangible cultural properties. However, in order to utilize these visual documents effectively, it appears that a system for their preservation and management is indispensable. Moreover, interactive media including the Internet can provide foundation for effectively sharing information and expanding the potential for utilizing visual documents. At the same time, it is also true that a greater awareness for copyright protection is necessary. In this paper the author makes proposals for increasing awareness about the preservation and utilization of visual documents among local public bodies that would play a central role in the actual projects of documentation. The author also presents some concrete guidelines toward the realization of this aim.
