内容記述 | Several additional points are mentioned in the present article in connection with the publication of the Kaikoku Michi no Ki owned by the His toriographical Institute, the University of Tokyo. The Kaikoku Michi no Ki was written in the early spring of 1637 by IWASA Matabei as the record of his journey from Fukui to Edo by way of Kyoto. The version of the Historiographical In stitute does not convey the original form of the record in its entirety. In this manuscript there are two notes, “the beginning seems to be lacking” and “the rest is nuclear” at the outset and the end. In the text there are two more notes which read, “from here for a sheet and a half the text is defaced and impossible to read,” and “from this point to Seki there is no account on the journey.” These four notes suggest that in the original record there were four parts which were impossible to decipher or had been lost, one each at the beginning and the end and two in between, leaving three sections that could be read. The first section of the present text consists of several lines, which is an account on Kitanoshō (present-day Fukui City). The second section can be divided into the following accounts: the journey from Takefu (Fukui Prefecture) to Tsuruga (Fukui Prefecture); the journey from Tsuruga to Kyoto along the west coast of Lake Biwa ; ten days in Kyoto meeting friends and sightseeing and off to Seta (Shiga Prefecture). It is assumed that at the beginning of the second section the order is confused and that a large part of it is missing. The third section is an account on the journey along the Tōkaidō highway from Seki (Mie Pre fecture) to Mishima (Shizuoka Prefecture). The record on the journey between Mishima and Edo has been lost. could be read. What is important to note in this version in the Historiographical Institute is that in five different places a Japanese syllabic letter “e” alone is written between lines. It is assumed by the author of the present article that this letter “e” means “illustra tion.” The author further assumes that in the process of transcription the letter “e” came to be written instead of copying each illustration which was in the original record by Matabei. It seems natural that a painter Matabei should have inserted illustrations in his journey record. In the section dealing with Shijō Gawara, a popular pleasure quarter on the Kamo River in Kyoto, too, the letter “e” is written. Though different in size, the illustration for this section would have been close to the “Screen Painting of Shijō Gawara” executed during the Kan'ei Era (1642-1644). The discovery of the original text of the Kaikoku Michi no Ki, which is said to have been transmitted to the U.S.A., is much hoped for. |
