Using X-ray beam whose diameter was collimated at 2mm, measurements were taken at more than 1200 points throughout the three handscrolls. \n More than 460 people are drawn in these handscrolls, but this investigation revealed that lead white (lead carbonate hydroxide), a pigment that produces a beautiful glossy white color, was used only on the principal persons drawn. For example, in the scene at the end of the first scroll where four persons are drawn, lead white was used on higher ranking figures such as the Emperor, Dajodaijin (head of ministers) and Minister of the Right (second place among ministers) ; lead white was not used on the figure of Dainagon (lower of the ministers) with his back turned to the viewer in standing. This indicates that different types of pigment were used to differentiate the social status of the figures depicted, with the figures of the minister class or higher rank shown in a manner that would make them more conspicuous in a scene. Regarding the red colored materials, three kinds of pigments, cinnabar (mercury sulfide), red lead (lead oxide) and red iron (iron oxide), were used skillfully for drawing the images of buildings and fire. 内容記述 | The Illustrated Stories on the Courtier Ban Dainagon, a designated National Treasure collected at Idemitsu Museum of Arts, is composed of three handscrolls approximately 31.5cm wide and 9m long respectively. It is renowned as a major Heian period painting and considered one of Japan’s four great handscroll paintings. These handscrolls depict the taleof a politician’s ambitions and fall from power, and is based on historical facts. The National Research Institute for Cultural Properties, Tokyo and the Idemitsu Museum of Art cooperatively investigated painting materials and drawing techniques of the handscrolls. This report describes the findings of an investigation utilizing a portable X-ray fluorescence spectrometer. Using X-ray beam whose diameter was collimated at 2mm, measurements were taken at more than 1200 points throughout the three handscrolls. More than 460 people are drawn in these handscrolls, but this investigation revealed that lead white (lead carbonate hydroxide), a pigment that produces a beautiful glossy white color, was used only on the principal persons drawn. Gold was also used for drawing the figures of the clothing of women inside buildings. |
