内容記述 | This paper presents a case study of a reproductive approach to materials used for a travel coat made of kudzu cloth in the nineteenth century Japan in order to deal with documentation and preservation of traditional craft techniques. In addition to kudzu cloth, this coat consists of various materials such as imported black woolen cloth for the collar, silk braided cords for loops, water buffalo’s horn for hooks and hemp for sewing threads. Firstly, in order to clarify characteristic features of styles, materials and manufacturing techniques, examination of the object was carried out including scientific analysis such as fiber examination, dye analysis and chemical tests. Methods of reproducing materials and techniques applied for the travel coat were discussed in collaboration with holders of traditional craft techniques on the basis of results of object examination. Then, materials were reproduced by craftsmen of respective fields, and each process was recorded as photographs and video tapes. This study provided a network among scholars, material suppliers, craftsmen and scientists. As a result of interviews to holders of traditional craft techniques, it was found that shortage of raw materials, consumers and successors are some of the issues facing them. It was also found that manufacturing techniques for Japanese traditional cotton, kudzu and silk yarns as well as sewing techniques should be preserved for the next generation, and that they can be applied as conservation techniques for cultural properties. | |||||
