In 1954, Mr. Jirō UMEZU published an article on yamato-e portrait painting of the Kamakura Period, in which he examined the trend of secular portrait paintings of that period. Mr. Toshihide AKAMATSU in 1955 discussed some historical back \nground of the emergence and prevalence of nise-e. Recently, a book on a history of portrait paintings was written by Mr. Tsugio MIYA, and one of its chapters entitled “Portrait Paintings in Middle Ages” deals with nise-e. This is one of the latest works on the issue. \n What is now required is to conduct more concrete studies, in addition to making generalized discussions and trying to establish the definition of nise-e. In the present article, he discusses Nobuzane FU JIWARA whose life is relatively well known compared to other nise-e painters. Nobuzane was born around 1177 and died about 1265. Although he made himself a distinguished waka poet already in his twenties, he did not achieve a high rank as a court official because he was not from a noble family nor did he have influential nobles as his supporters. Secondly, the theme of his paintings was largely confined to portraitures which might have been called nise-e in his day. Thirdly, the documented records of his painting activities are concentrated on the latter period of ex-emperor Go-Toba through that of ex-emperor GoHorikawa (late 1210\u0027s-early 1230\u0027s). These features indicate that there was a distinct preference for nise-e during the periods of Go-Toba and Go-Horikawa ex-emperors.\n Originally, nise-e emerged in the late twelfth century along with the general elimination of taboo about painting portraits of nobles, as Mr. Toshihide AKAMATSU discussed in his article. 内容記述 | The in-depth discussion on nise-e was initiated by the publication of the article of Mr. Kisaku TANAKA in 1939, followed by several authors' studies on the same issue. This series of discussion was carried out mainly on the definition and significance of nise-e. In 1954, Mr. Jirō UMEZU published an article on yamato-e portrait painting of the Kamakura Period, in which he examined the trend of secular portrait paintings of that period. Mr. Toshihide AKAMATSU in 1955 discussed some historical back ground of the emergence and prevalence of nise-e. Recently, a book on a history of portrait paintings was written by Mr. Tsugio MIYA, and one of its chapters entitled “Portrait Paintings in Middle Ages” deals with nise-e. This is one of the latest works on the issue. What is now required is to conduct more concrete studies, in addition to making generalized discussions and trying to establish the definition of nise-e. That is to shed light on profiles on nise-e painters, to clarify their working environment and to examine extant nise-e paintings. In view of the above, the author tries to look into the life of nise-e painters and their environment. Thirdly, the documented records of his painting activities are concentrated on the latter period of ex-emperor Go-Toba through that of ex-emperor GoHorikawa (late 1210's-early 1230's). These features indicate that there was a distinct preference for nise-e during the periods of Go-Toba and Go-Horikawa ex-emperors. Originally, nise-e emerged in the late twelfth century along with the general elimination of taboo about painting portraits of nobles, as Mr. Toshihide AKAMATSU discussed in his article. The nise-e was further promoted by the preference and support shown by the aforementioned two ex-emperors in the thirteenth century, the significance of which cannot be overemphasized though the development of nise-e owes much to Nobuzane's own activities. |
